Sanji the cook

The cook of the Straw Hat Pirates is Sanji, サンジ (sanji), also known as “Black Leg”,  黒脚 or くろあし (kuroashi).  Though Sanji’s name was spelled using katakana, the same sound if spelled with kanji or hiragana will be 三時 or さんじ (sanji), which is three o’clock.

To ask about the time, 時間 or  じかん (jikan), we can say:

時間は何ですか。 (jikan wa nan desu ka) : what is the time?

Or

今何じですか。(ima nanji desu ka) : what is the time now?

If it’s three o’clock, answer 三時です (sanji desu).  If it’s 3 a.m. say 午前三時です (gozen sanji desu) and for 3 p.m. 午後三時です (gogo sanji desu).  When it is three thirty, we can say三時半です (sanji han desu).

* When saying the time, the pronunciation is different from that of numbers.

Minutes is 分 orふん (fun).  But by just adding分 to the number may not be the case, as the pronunciation may change.

What is the time now? 今何じですか。(ima nanji desu ka)

It is now 10.10 p.m.  今何午後十時十一分です。 (ima juuji juuippun desu)
